PROGRAMS and SERVICES FOR SENIORS, FAMILIES and YOUTH

Community Services

Women Focus Group

Our monthly meetings address issues of interest such as life skills and Education on Health and Wellness. Workshops are held on Hepatitis B, Diabetes, Cervical Cancer, Medical/Medicare and other important topics.

Because We Care

A Breast Cancer Program in which UCC provides Breast Cancer awareness education to the community. Our focus is on understanding the necessity for Breast Cancer Screening and teaching how to do self examination. We provide referral services for people in need.

Healthy Living Workshop.  This workshop will help you learn and practice self management skills. Learn how to manage your chronic conditions and improve your health. This six week course will help change your life.

Translation

We provide translation service to help the non-English speaking people in time of need. Emergency services such as police, fire, paramedics and medical personnel avail themselves of this valuable service. City officials and other government departments also use our agency for translation.

Literacy Program/English as Second Language-Khmer and Spanish

This literacy program helps the student to read, write and speak English. Classes are offered three days a week. This class becomes the gateway to mainstreaming into American society.

Reading and Conversational English Class

A Los Angeles Unified School District educator conducts this reading and speaking class. These two hour classes given two days a week uses the technique of reading and speaking words and phrases with explanation through cultural experiences.

Citizenship Education

These participants learn about the history of the United States of America as well as reviewing citizenship questions. Practice for the citizenship test and learning how to be interviewed for this privilege is also a important part of the class.

Food Distribution Program

UCC’s bi-monthly food distribution program is located on-site and supplies food to low-income families in the community. This much needed Federal Program is supported by the Department of Agriculture.

Advocacy

UCC assists community members and advocates for them on various issues where our help is needed. These include physical and mental health, social services, unemployment, schooling, immigration, domestic issues, and many more.

Monthly Community Forum

UCC is hosting a monthly community meeting on the first Wednesday of each month. This is a opportunity for all residents to be introduced to the City of Long Beach resources and programs available to everyone. Guest speakers from various departments will be invited to discuss important topics of interest.

Youth Services

Tutoring

This valuable program assists students on their homework assignments and to help them learn and enjoy the school experience. For convenient access to the student, tutoring is offered four days a week. We believe the pathway to being self-sufficient and productive begins with education.

Youth Leadership Focus Group

A weekly meeting that has a focus on youth issues. Guest speakers address topics from smoking, gambling, drinking, drugs and crime to other subjects of interest such as employment and education.

Youth Cuisine Cooking

Our cooking class gives the youth an opportunity to learn the art of making delicious dishes. Taught by a professional chef who will provide instruction and give the youth hands-on experience in making great food such as sushi, spring rolls, desserts and more.

Piñata Making Workshop

The youth are learning the technique of making piñatas created from recycled cardboard boxes and newspaper. They will design, make and decorate with colorful tissue paper and prepare them to be filled with lots of candy. The youth will create their own company name and sell this wonderful artwork as a fundraising project.

Boy Scouts of America

Boy Scouts of America meetings are held each week. They learn the principles of scouting and earn badges for their accomplishments. The scouts are also engaged in community service and learn about the value of higher education and planning for their future.

Over 2400 young people take advantage of our programs each year.
